Schizophrenia is characterized by the presence of hallucinations and/or delusions, as well as a number of negative symptoms, such as depression, social withdrawal, anger, inappropriate emotional responses and difficulty experiencing joy. Certain people are said to be "at high risk" of receiving a schizophrenia diagnosis. These patients have a family history of schizophrenia (either with one of their parents or siblings) and they've also had psychotic or suicidal experiences. A patient fitting the criteria for this disorder will have a 20-40% chance of being diagnosed with schizophrenia within one year.
